Recycled Bird Feeder

A friend of mine from a Usenet group, Ivan Reid, invented a quick and easy recycled bird feeder using a Pringles tin and a sardine can. There are instructions of how to make it on his webpage.

He says the design has been slightly refined over the years:
You might want to note that it finally succumbed to the elements after about 2-1/2 years. Also it's very windy in my backyard and I kept losing the cap off the top, so I cut the top off a 1-1/2 litre mineral-water bottle just below the neck and slipped that over the top to keep the rain out.

I like it a lot. Of course, it's not exactly a thing of beauty. But I don't put out birdfeeders to adorn the garden. I put them out to attract the birds, which are more beautiful than any garden ornament.

Clever! It would be quite easy to beautify, too, with either paint or collage. Collage with a nature theme would be pretty nice and old magazines are easy to pick up cheap or free.

Years ago, I did an ocean critter collage on the bucket I use to collect water in the tub and wrapped the handle with dark seaweed-green raffia. I still use it and it looks far less tacky than the other recycled paint and kitty litter buckets in the house. ;-)

Alex is on at me to build a batbox. Trouble is, we really don't have many places where one could sensibly be fitted. I might see if we can persuade the school to have one though. Their big central chiminey might be ideal.

That is the most amazing re-use of stuff I have seen, it's brilliant! Surely worthy of a Blue Peter badge!

I love this idea think I might give it a go and cover the ouside in outdoor poyfilla and do a collage with brocken tiles and the birds would have something to hold on to!Kathyann and the girls at me's mum's muffins
