Sprouts - Not Just for Christmas

In the summer I long to eat salad and vegetables, fish and cold chicken. But when the cold weather comes I welcome the swede and leeks, roast meats, pies and casseroles, and yes, sprouts. It seems to confuse Ed when I serve sprouts. He said "It's not Christmas yet is it?" But sprouts are not just for Christmas. Steamed and served with a knob of butter and plenty of black pepper (or better still, ground nutmeg), they're divine. I had mine with a nice gammon steak and some boiled potatoes.

The next day I used the leftover vegetables and some proper corned beef from the butcher to make bubble and squeak for my lunch the next day. And that's the best bit of all. Ed doesn't realise, but that's the real reason I served him sprouts the night before.

I absolutely agree - I love sprouts. Not sure if they're my favourite vegetable or whether that accolade goes to broad beans, but they're certainly up there.

I like 'em done the Nigella way with a load of butter, pancetta and chopped chestnuts. Very rich but oh so good!

I do agree Melanie, salads for summer and nice hot food in winter. There is a lot in media about growing lettuce and salad for the winter.

Best wishes Sylvia

Sprouts really are the best and should be for all winter not just Christmas.

This year I'm looking forward to my first home-grown crop and am getting very excited over the little buds.

Oh yes - I love it when sprouts come into season.

Either simmered for a minute or two, then soaked in butter and nutmeg, or cut in half and sauteed with shallot and garlic - yum!

They even make a half decent curry :-)

garlic, sesame oil and soy sauceextremely moreish!

I love sprouts too! The season is just too short for me, and the frozen sprouts are disgusting! I saw a recipe last week where you cook the sprouts and make a puree with creme fraishe!

I love sprouts too, and I find frozen ones are okay if I run out of fresh ones. Eating my Sunday dinner I tend to work my way round the veg, and east the meat last. Then I finish off the veg that my hubby & kids have left.

I'm with Matron, frozen sprouts are foul. Thay have no texture they're just mushy. Beautiful fresh sprouts, cooked just long enough, that's what you want.

Love gammon, love sprouts, love boiled pots with butter and cracked pepper. Please put them on the menu for my Christmas visit, Mel.
