Learning to Knit

Sam knittingSam is learning to knit. He wanted to knit a teddy bear for Eleanor, but I've persuaded him to start with squares. I'll sew them up into a bean bag when he's made two of them. He's trying very hard and making great progress. I do a couple of rows when he's not looking so it grows a bit faster for him. It's hard to be patient when you're six.

Oh, bless him - the first thing he wants to do is something nice for someone else!

I made two bean bags from the book we're working on, filled with yellow lentils. TJ (7) is using them to teach Rebecca (7) how to catch. It's surprising how much easier they are to learn with than a ball. Hours of fun. I haven't dyed my yarn yet though. But I do now own a Singer sewing machine. How did I ever manage before I had it. I was five hours on it yesterday. It's addictive.

The National School here teaches knitting, sewing & crochet to all the pupils, or tries to ~ I think they've given up trying to teach Annon to sew! I started teaching Annon to knit when she was 5 after she asked for needles & wool for Christesmas, but I won't teach crochet: I can help, but because I have to do it cack-handed & completely wrong, I refuse to teach a method that would cause problems in school where it has to be done "just so" for Miss. I think it came as a shock that this funny "English" (she isn't really, but that's where we lived before!) girl could knit & knit well before Miss got to her. I think having a knitty (knutty) mother helped her interest.

I hope your son continues with his interest in knitting

My nephew showed a great interest in knitting when he was about the same age. I was visiting and thought his sisters would get a kick out of watching me make a dress for one of their dolls. They were happy to let me do it but he was the only one who ever wanted to help. He used to stand snuggled under my arm and wrap the wool around the needle for me. He could keep at it for half an hour at a time, which was amazing for someone of that age I thought.

My friend's grandson wants me to teach him to knit but as he's just 4 I told him we'll do it when he's a bit bigger. I do think it's lovely that boys show an interest in crafts :)
