I thought I was so clever, using shredded waste paper as chicken bedding. But the problem is that shredded paper, when combined with chicken poo and left to dry, becomes a kind of combination of papier mache and adobe. It's almost completely impossible to remove from any surface it adheres to, including hens' ankles. On the other hand, I may have inadvertently invented an exciting new environmentally-friendly building material.

That's funny! Sometimes we think we are being so clever then life sure gets us.
Life with chickens is always fun. Your building material idea would be great until it rained. Maybe you could press it into self fertilizing, compostable flower pots.
I think Alan is on to something... Slow release! Fabulous
Glad I read that...I'm getting my chickens in a few days, and now I won't make the same mistake!
If you manage to scrap it off... imagine the compost it will make!

lol- sounds like something i would do if i had chickens
haha that's pretty funny. Me and my hubby also need a new ways to clean up after our chickens. After my hubby proposed to me with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring from www.idonowidont.com his parents told us we will have a farm! Its hard to take care of!

Thank you very much for sharing.
I have read some of your post and I really enjoyed reading it.

Hi Melanie,
If you lay cardboard down first on the surfaces in the hen house you can clean up really easily as the whole lot can be lifted out and put straight in the compost.
Best wishes

Wonder if you could mix the shredded paper with something "green" like hay, which might stop it clumping up too much and would balance out your compost nicely..?
