Smash a Sprout

Here's a super little flash game. You control a man sat at his Christmas dinner and you have to smash the evil sprouts that come marching across the table. If you miss them they jump in his mouth, if he eats 3 he turns green and expires. The animation is Terry Gilliam-esque, especially the way his eyes bug out when he is stomping on the sprouts.
.
The serious point is that the ingredients for a traditional British Christmas lunch often travel up to 80,000 food miles which is especially crazy because they are all in season locally (which is the whole reason it's our traditional Christmas meal). Or you could just smash the sprouts because you don't like them. Either way it's a satisfying game.

Why not hunt out some top-quality local produce for your Christmas lunch this year? You could start by signing up to an organic box scheme.

Already have done! Riverford do all our fruit (since the garden won't be in full fruit production for several years), but the only veg we've had to buy since June has been two lettuce (when I buggered up the planting) and a chilli pepper. Oh, and some sweet potato which I can't see myself bothering with.

It's not going to last though, since we've seriously undergrown onions and potatoes. More space for them next year then!

Last Thursday I visited a new organic & locally sourced grocers, and it was fab. It's not often i walk out of a shop grinning from ear to ear.
So yup, I'm getting all fruit, veg & dairy from there from now on. And it's about 2 miles ago so it's 'bus'able & walkable in summer with the kids.

Have you read Michael Pollan's The Omnivores Dilemma ? Well worth it,puts food miles, buying local and organics into perspective.

This Christmas we are having duck from the local butcher, potatoes from the shop (I never got around to planting my Christmas potatoes), and parsnips, sprouts and red cabbage from the garden.
