Last month I challenged Bean Sprouts readers to
calculate their hourly pay. The reason for doing this is that it allows you to
convert any purchase into hours-at-work, instead of pounds or dollars or whatever. You can immediately see how many hours you had to work to pay for a tank full of petrol, or a Nintendo Wii, or a lunch at Starbucks.
42 people voted in the poll, and their votes broke down as follows:
- I've gone green! I've calculated my hourly pay! 15 (35%)
- I was already green! I already knew my hourly pay! 21 (50%)
- I don't want to! I'd rather not know my hourly pay! 3 (7%)
- I'm greener than thou! I operate in a non-cash economy! 3 (7%)
If you know your hourly pay, and if you know how much extra money you spent over Christmas (neither of these have to be to the exact penny, just a rough idea) you can figure out how many hours at work it will take to pay off your Christmas spend. I wonder if that will be a scary calculation or a pleasant surprise?
There will be a new challenge posted for January soon.
