Poynton 1 - Tesco 0

Today the Macclesfield Borough Council have unanimously rejected Tesco’s application for a supermarket in Poynton during their planning meeting.

That means Tesco have three options: give up the idea of building a store in Poynton, second, appeal within the six months, or lastly, submit a new or modified scheme.

From Poynton Against Tesco website.

The bad news is Waitrose have also applied to build a supermarket in Poynton. This is receiving more of a mixed reception from Poynton residents who seem to like the idea of upmarket Waitrose more than the low-brow appeal of Tesco. But all the reasons I objected to Tesco - the risk to local traders, the influx of extra traffic, the loss of local jobs and the siphoning of money out of the village - also apply to Waitrose or any other chain supermarket. So I'll be objecting to Waitrose too.

Remember Alan Coren's comment? The only good thing to be said about Sainsbury's is that it keeps the riff-raff out of Waitrose.

Waitrose, never been in one. But you're right about the impact. Unless the Waitrose prices will mean less of an impact compared to cheapy Tesco. Is the Waitrose store to be on the same scale as Tesco? My worry is that Waitrose will move in, followed by Tesco at a later date.

Well, although not over, this is a good start. I don't honestly think Poynton needs a supermarket of any kind - there are lots of independent shops selling everything there.

Waitrose would be just as bad in some ways, although I am not sure if they have the same destructive policies as Tesco with regard to small traders.

I disagree. I think Waitrose would be a very different proposition to Tesco. I believe the presence of a Waitrose would complement and not compete with existing Poynton businesses.

Waitrose also has a good corporate social record in matters affecting community and farming. This has come through on various programs such as Radio 4's Farming Today and the recent Jamie Oliver TV program.

There can be no doubt that Waitrose would increase choice for the residents of Poynton. I currently have to go to Waitrose in Cheadle Hulme or Wilmslow to do a decent organic shop - not something that is currently catered for in Poynton. I'd be happy to walk into Poynton rather than drive to CH/Wilmslow - so that has to be an environmental plus! I'm sure there are many others that would do likewise...
