The great escape

More chicken dramas last night, the damned things escaped right out of the house and over the road. Half the kids in the street and some of the adults got involved in rounding them back up again. Ed arrived home the precise second I was closing the gate having finally got them both back. Typical.

I read somewhere that 90% of the business of smallholding is purely about livestock penning. That could be right.

Anyway we've nailed more chicken wire around the place we think they may have got out. The place is starting to look like Colditz.

hey, couldn't you crochet some barbed wire or something? You're pretty deft with the kneedles!

Melanie, I really enjoy reading your blog. Keep up the good work, it sounds like fun despite all the adventures.
Have you ever read Daniel Butler's book: Urban Dreams, Rural Realities? I think you might enjoy it.

Hi Maria, thanks for your nice comment. I hope you keep reading - there's an update almost every day so there should be something new to see each time you check in.

I haven't read that book but I'll look out for it. It sounds a bit like another book I'm going to order from the library called "21st Century Smallholder" which is about getting back to the land without leaving the city or something. And have you checked out the Self-sufficient-ish website? It's in my Links section. That's about urban self-sufficiency too.

Sorry, but I just have to ROFL. Animals are bound and determined to get to wherever it is that you least want them. Ours are fond of tilling our garden for us (after we have planted), and eating our strawberries. A couple years ago, they jumped up and ate the sweet corn off of the stalks. I armed my son with the hose and told him to wet down any chicken who dares to eat our corn. LOL

But if you want to see Stalag 13, go ahead and watch Chicken Run.

Anyhow, chickens can be trained to respect hot wire (electric fence). I haven't tried it, so I can't give you too many details.
