The answer to the Anglo-Saxon riddle posted yesterday was a butter churn. It comes from the Exeter Book, a tenth century collection of Old English literature.
In an age when reading and writing was a rare skill possessed only by a few, I love the fact that somebody bothered to write down a collection of rude jokes and other random writings, and kept it in a safe place for 1000 years.
