10 Reasons To Eat Organic

1. It's better for you.

2. It's better for your children. Because of their smaller size, children are more affected by pesticides in their food than adults, but feeding them organic food has been proved to significantly reduce their intake of pesticides.

3. It's better for the farmers and their families if they don't have to use pesticides and other toxic chemicals. This is especially true in countries which have less strict health and safety legislation.

4. It's better for the farm animals. Joyce d'Silva of Compassion in World Farming said "Organic farming has the potential to offer the very highest standards of animal welfare."

5. It's better for wild animals. In one study, organic farms were found to contain 85% more plant species, 33% more bats, 17% more spiders and 5% more birds than conventional farms.

6. It's better for the planet because it doesn't lead to soil erosion. Conventional farming is responsible for unsustainable soil loss, but organic farming actually builds the soil.

7. It doesn't lead to waterway pollution.

8. It doesn't depend on oil-based agrochemicals.

9. It uses less energy because it relies on people rather than machinery. David Milliband said “in many, but not all cases, [organic food] produces fewer greenhouse gases”.

10. It tastes better, and don't believe anyone who tells you they don't. Many years ago my sister Stephanie was helping me chop some carrots for our lunch and she ate a slice of carrot. Immediately she started exclaiming "Oh, oh, these carrots are wonderful! Why do they taste so good?" She hadn't known they were organic carrots.

Convinced? Why not sign up for an organic veg box to be delivered to your door?

Remember there are only two more days to enter our Skooperbox competition. There have only been seven correct entries so far, so your chances are excellent of winning a package of Skooperboxes, the recycled biodegradable dog poop scooper. All correct entries will be entered into a draw and winners will be announced on Wednesday.

Add to all these benefits the fact that organic home grown or local vegetables TASTE so good too!

My humble production in my tiny garden would never be enough to label us as self sufficient but, fortunately, we have a local farmer who comes around in his van once a week and supplies us and most of our neighbours. How good can that be?

For years I didn't really buy the "taste" argument about organically-grown veggies, though I still grew stuff organically for all the other reasons.

Then, about 6 or 8 years ago, a next-door neighbour dropped off a couple of surplus Cabbages. My wife is normally a brilliant cook, so I was a bit hesitant, not wanting to cause offence, when I asked her, "Did these get a bit overcooked, then?" having eaten some of our own Cabbages -- same variety -- a few days earlier.

The only possible difference between his and our Cabbages was the "organic" bit. Convinced me in a hurry, I tell you!

I ignore aphids, as they are eaten by ladybirds or birds within days. The only bugs I need to pick off by hand are gooseberry sawfly and asparagus beetle as, judging by their smell, they don't taste good and aren't eaten.

In my experience, growing organically is easier and cheaper - after the first two or three years, that is.

Hi Melanie and others,

I am working part time for Bags of Change, a new ethical shopping loyalty scheme. The bags are made of organic cotton and semi wild farmed hemp. You can get discounts in shops that are local, organic, fairtrade, sustainable, that part of the scheme. Visit the site http://www.BagsofChange.co.uk to view the shops and to buy the beautiful bag.

Thanks,

Katie

Great info...have you seen the website The Daily Green? They have some good stuff on there about food, tips, babys, news that centers on being green. I like the recipes because the give you some good ideas as to what to do with organic veg and fruit. Some are easy and some a bit more involved but good. They also have a place where you can submit your own green recipe under community.
